ASSISTED TRANSPORT

COUNTY CARS

Lancashire County Council’s “Community Transport Team” provides funding for 15 County Car schemes throughout the district. The day to day operation of the schemes is managed by local volunteer co-ordinators and a team of volunteer drivers.

Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to provide a door-to-door service for anyone who finds it difficult or impossible to use public transport. This helps them to travel up to a 20 miles radius from their homes. For anyone who can use public transport but who lives in an area where there are no suitable services, they may be taken to and from their nearest reasonable bus stop, railway station etc. The aim of the service is to complement the public transport network, and to ensure that it is not seen as a “Cheap Taxi”, but rather as a caring service for those who need it.

The success of the schemes makes a major contribution to the lives of many people, enabling isolated groups to undertake essential trips which they would not be able to do without the goodwill of our volunteers.

Full fare: 42p per mile travelled

Half fare for bus pass holders i.e.21p per mile

40p per single journey for blind and disabled.’

‘The service provides for people in rural areas to reach medical appointments, shopping, and visiting. If support is needed, a second person can accompany the passenger. The service is a lifeline to people who otherwise would be trapped in their homes.

Drivers use their own cars, and are paid expenses towards their costs. Additional insurance cover is arranged, and their only commitment is when they agree to make the trip.

I hope you feel you can help to keep this vital service running. If you can help, or would like more information, please call Christine on 01772 682503. E-mail: chrishoban@aol.com
