Wrea Green Field Day – 2013
At last the better weather has arrived and Field Day is now just around the corner! This year’s event will be held on the 29th June and the Organising Committee has now finalised their plans and are putting in place all the arrangements necessary to make it a memorable day.
The programme of events will commence with judging of the fancy dress participants on the Green at 11.30. This will be followed at 12.00 by the retiring Rose Queen Procession; you may recall that Miss Jessica Millar was our Rose Queen last year and we hope that she has enjoyed her year in office. The procession around the Green will include the Red Rose Brass Band, Fylde Coast Cloggers, Thornton Cleveleys Band and Blackpool Circus School.
At 12.20, our 2013 Rose Queen, Miss Ella Cocksey will be crowned. Ella is 10 years old and is in year 5 of Ribby with Wrea School. She will be crowned by Mr Jack Dobson who, as many of you know, was Chairman of the Field Day Committee for many years. We are very pleased that Jack has agreed to undertake the crowning this year and we are also grateful to him for the help and guidance he has given to the new Organising committee during the year.
The Arena Entertainments will commence at 13.00 followed by the Children’s races, Family Novelty Sports, and Children’s Football. The Adult Sports will take place at 16.30 with a range of events and a great deal of fun is to be had, both for those participating and for those watching.
As usual, Cubbins Fair will be on the Green as well as a number of stalls and other entertainments.
The procession and adult sports are open to all the family, including grandchildren, friends of residents and to those who attend the school. There are prizes for single fancy dress entries in a number of age categories, Group entries also in age categories and Carnival floats with any number of participants of any age! All entrants are eligible to take part in the procession around the green.
All in all, we have a great day planned and we would like to encourage you and your friends and family to participate. Why not take part in the fancy dress competition and the procession to help keep this great tradition alive? Joining in the sports can be great fun as well – we are planning a great day but we need to get you involved too!
Last year, Field Day cost over £3000 to put on and we would like to encourage donations to help cover the cost of this year’s event. In early June we will be distributing copies of the official programme, kindly sponsored by Richard Wilson, and there will also be a collection envelope to allow donations to be made. Contributions will be anonymous but we would ask you please to give generously!
To allow Field Day to run smoothly, we rely on a great many people who give their time to assist with events on the day or in the days and weeks running up to Field Day. We are pleased to say that we have had a significant number of offers of help but a few more volunteers would ease the load further. We have a wide range of tasks that we need help with, such as programme distribution and the street collections, setting up and clearing the stage and arena, managing the road closures, putting out the no-parking cones and a host of other activities – so don’t worry we have a job that suits you! If you feel able to give a few hours to help make Field Day a success then we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please contact Hayley Stafford on 01772 681158 or Sherron Pickervance 01772 671580 or send an email to [email protected]
Thanks again for your support and we look forward to a great Field Day – we are nearly ready – are you?
