4th April, 2012. At a tense meeting of the Fylde Borough Development Management Committee the application to build a sports village in Wrea Green was rejected. Over 25 members of the public spoke passionately about the benefits and deepfelt worries of placing a football Stadium so close to many Wrea Green homes. The council officers recommended the application be refused. At the end of the 3 hour meeting the committee voted by 15 votes to 1 to follow the Planning Officers’ recommendation and reject the application. This was very much to the delight and relief of all villagers and especially the 350 who had written personal letters to Fylde Borough Council. The main reasons for rejecting the application were (1) the unacceptable urbanisation of a rural village, (2) a lack of community involvement and (3) the inevitable destruction of residential amenity especially in noise and light pollution.
There was, however, support for the principle of providing improved sporting facilities if a suitable location and the necessary finance could be found.
